Dive into the World of Underwater Travel!

A Puneri boy, a dive master and a fish in the water, Malhar has been to many beautiful tropical destinations in his quest to explore the oceans. His love story with the underwater world started at the tender age of 14, and he hasn’t looked back since! He is now spreading the joy of diving by teaching people in Pune what diving has to offer.
This Katta, Malhar will share with us his love of the oceans, how being underwater changed him and the secrets to travelling on a shoestring budget. Join us this Saturday, to know how diving can help you connect with yourself, and the world at large.

Lesser Known Wildlife Reserves Of India
Speaker : Mr Devendra Gogate
This session was supposed to be conducted by Ms Saee Gunbdawar. However the Monsoon took its toll on Saee’s health and we fell back to our ever reliable Foliager Devendra Gogate to fill in for this Katta session.
Devendra showcased his images from lesser known Wildlife Reserves of India like Little and Greater Rann of Kutch, Bera (known for sizable Leopard Population) and Panna Tiger Reserve.

Eastern Europe: Coming out of Russia’s shadow.

Prasad Sovani, a Corporate Trainer and a globe trotter talked about his trip to Eastern Europe, (Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia & Czech Republic) in the summer of 2015. A compulsive traveler, Prasad lived like a local in the homes of people from the area and when that was not possible he bunked at ISKCON
He shared his experiences from the cities of Krakow, Torun, Bled, Ljublana, Budapest, Prague as well as of the former concentration camps of Auschwitz Birkenau.

Two young girls, in their early twenties, set out on their trip with the bare necessities, and loads of excitement, their backpacks as their only companions. Or so they thought! They met and saw many people and places that resonated with them along the way, making it a journey to remember. “It was our 14000 ft leap of faith!!”, were the opening lines of their Presentation.
Their amazing journey along the famed Gangotri-Gomukh-Tapovan trek route in Uttarakhand, is a memory they will cherish forever!
Manasi and Rucha shared not only about the preparations and experience on the trek, but also answered questions on how it is (safe/unsafe) to travel Solo in India, and that too on a Trek.

Spain – The land Of Creative Spirit

Manjiri Mahajan and Sameer Duraphe are Pune-based renowned Landscape Architects and took this “architectural pilgrimage” to this land of Creative Spirits over a fortnight. The travel connoisseurs got a chance to see Spain from the perspective of Landscape Architects. a perspective much different from that of a casual tourist.
In Manjiri’s words, “Archways adorned with intricate Islamic script, rough stone monasteries hidden in fertile valleys, sky and river reflecting in titanium contours. The architecture of Spain is as diverse as it is breathtaking. Wherever you go in Spain you can’t fail to be astounded by its rich culture and its fascinating history. A country has so many of architectural wonders that its aptly called The Land Of Creative Spirits and its a must especially for those who admire art, creativity and architecture”

Valley Of Flowers

Valley Of Flowers has been one of the most sought after treks by nature-lovers and trekkers alike. Dr Mandar Datar, a noted Botanist, has been to Valley Of Flowers and has also extensively traveled in Sahyadris. He talked about the trek, the region, the people and the flowers and how they are same or different as compared to the flowers that we see more often in our own Sahyadris.
Blessed that he is with super sense of humor, the session was full of laughter and fun. Botany was never known to be so interesting.

Lahaul and Spiti

Travel bug hit Rahul Nene when he first camped with Foliage Outdoors way back in his school days. He traveled extensively aross Indian Forests and his work also took him to Europe and China.
The remote region of Lahaul and Spiti is still an enigma to the casual traveler where a traveler wishes to travel atleast once in his lifetime…and Rahul Nene has traveled there twice and that too in different seasons. The images of incomparable in mountain-scape, rugged beauty of its rocky escapements, splendor of its snow covered peaks, the stark contrast of barren mountains against blue waters of high altitude lakes were showcased by Rahul.
Lastly, Rahul shared his experiences of seeing the most elusive Snow Leopard that he managed to see and photograph in extreme weather conditions.

Land of the Tiger – Devendra Gogate

Its said that if you want anyone to fall in love with Indian Jungles, just…somehow, let him have a glimpse of majestic Tiger roaming in the Wild. And on this Katta it was all about Tigers…as seen and photographed by Devendra Gogate. Devendra Gogate is a Foliager and a very gifted Wildlife Photographer. In love with Indian Jungles for more than a decade, more so with “The Tger”, Devendra has an enviable collection of Tiger Images that he showcased at this Katta.
Devendra shared him impressions and experiences from popular Indian Tiger Reserves like Sunderbans, Jim Corbett National Park, Ranthambhore, Bandhavgarh and Kanha.

Solo Backpacking Travel in Italy
Speaker : Ms Rupa Joshi
Ms Rupa Joshi, a software industry veteran of 27 years, got many opportunities to explore which she grabbed with both hands!!! Her consultant role allowed her to travel to more than 20 countries, from European countries like UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy to down under New Zealand and Australia, from conservative countries like Qatar to exotic places like Jamaica.
At Travel Katta, she presented her images and experiences of Italy. She shared the meticulous planning that she did for this solo-exploration.
In her own words, “I did the meticulous planning before my travel for bookings etc. (No, I am yet to reach the stage of Nomad !!), however, during actual travel, I did not restrict myself to a conservative schedule. So during this session, you will hear not only about locales, but about the Italians, my cosmopolitan co-travelers and a glimpse of warm Sicilian culture beyond their known ‘Mafian’ face”.

Unexplored Cultural Treasures of China

A chance opportunity by the Government of China offered something slightly off-beat to Ar. Chanda Kanetkar. In an attempt to bring their ancient villages on the map, they announced a project where you stay with a local Chinese family, mingle with other international participants and explore hands-on, all the aspects of Chinese art and culture. As a participant in this project, she got a chance to absorb Chinese everyday life, complete with its whims and fancies.

It was great to hear a man from Haryana who “heard about Everest and decided to scale it!!!”…and his relentless efforts for over a decade to make his dream a reality!!!

The Great OverLand Adventure: From Stuttgart to Pune in a Mercedes

Vikrant was part of a unique Mercedes Project that envisaged to test their vehicle Mercedes GLA through hostile terrain and sub-zero temperatures. The project saw the “Made In India” vehicle cover 17800 kms over 30 days crossing 12 countries across Europe and Asia, from Mercedes Headquarters in Germany to their factory in Pune.
Vikrant joined the Project mid-way and was its official photographer through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, China, Tibet, Nepal and India. Vikrant focused on China and Tibet and regaled the guests with his stories and stunning images (of Mercedes as well as the land )

The Andaman & Nicobars – An Island Journey

Pankaj Sekhsaria, noted Ecologist, Researcher, Photographer, Author and Activist, all rolled into one personality and whose work on Andaman and Nicobar Islands is highly acclaimed, graced Travel Katta # 7.
Pankaj’s work in Andaman and Nicobar Islands spans more than two decades and his vast and rare collection of images and experiences left the discerning crowd highly impressed.
Pankaj is also an author of a fiction book titled “The Last wave” that covers complex issues of Andaman Islands as the backdrop. On request from the audience, Pankaj read out a short section from his book.

7000 Kms road trip across the Western US

The first Katta of the year 2016 featured immaculately planned 25 day self-driven tour by Deepak Kulkarni and family to United States of America.
A senior executive with telecom industry, Deepak said that he had this tour in mind for more than a decade and had studied exhaustively to ensure that there would be no hiccups when he would be on his own.
The images of regions in the Western US like Yosemite, Yellowstone, Teton, and the Arches National Parks were shared by Deepak with more than 70 guests who got good pointers about US as a holiday destination as well as about the preparation that should go into self-driving holidays.

Gokyo Lakes Trek in Nepal

Avid trekkers, Uday and Vidya Sukhthankar shared experience of their trek to Gokyo Lakes and Renjola Pass that is in Everest / Khumbu region of Nepal- Himalaya.
In Uday’s words, this was a two week trek and one of the best in our 13 years of Himalayan trekking. The trek was challenging with high altitude and steep ascent as well as descent. First time I climbed to 17600 ft, although Vidya has had been to around 19000 ft earlier. The overall experience of the trek and the incredible views of the Himalayas made the whole effort worthwhile!!!”

Swiss & Bavaria from a Scientist’s Perspective

Parag Mahajani, an Astronomer, Public Speaker on Stars, Planets and everything “Astro” in nature was our Guest Speaker on Katta # 4. He shared his experiences of the Swiss and Bavaria Region (Germany) from a Scientist’s perspective. The images of Einstein’s Home where Theory of Relativity was born, images of the Museums of World Renowned Automobile Companies like Mercedes Benz, Porsche, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen and Cog Wheel train of Jungfrau were shared by Parag with the guests.

Sachin Deshmukh, a Travel Designer with Infinite Journeys is an avid traveler. He chose to travel to Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, three of the most beautiful countries in Indo-China region. Solo Cycling Through Ladakh
Speaker : Abhishek Narvekar
Abhishek Narvekar who has traveled “Solo” on his Cycle from Manali to the rooftop of the world Leh and ending at Srinagar. He covered a total distance of 1000 kilometres on his 21 geared TREK bicycle!!!
The high-point of the journey was his successful scaling of world’s highest motorable road in the World i.e Khardung-La. Language of presentation will be Marathi for this Saturday.
