India’s North-East is slowly waking up as a sought after Tourism Destination. It’s a land of immense natural beauty. There are a plethora of beautiful and breathtaking places in North-East India. In this blog post, I try to answer the questionsof travelers planning their Holidays to Manipur – Nagaland.
While a lot of information is available on the Internet, I am adding my two bits here for anyone who is considering the visit these seven States of India’a North East, with specific reference to the States of Manipur and Nagaland. At the end of this small post, I hope that you would be make a definitive plan to visit these States.
Here are my answers to some Frequently Asked Questions :
Q : Can one see All of the North-East in one tour?
A : North-East India consists of seven States. Technically, you can visit them at one go. But should you really do so? My answer is a firm NO!
North-East is beautiful, it’s vast and there is simply a lot to see and experience here. It’s highly improbable that you will get (at least) 25 days at a stretch to do some justice to the Region.
Q : What would be a good strategy to explore the North-East?
A : It will make more sense to plan your North-East explorations over multiple visits (in the same year or spread over a few years).
You will require two longer vacations for Assam (with Meghalaya) and Arunachal Pradesh.
A long vacation for Manipur and Nagaland should work. But two shorter vacations, of four nights each for Manipur and Nagaland is a better idea. This makes Manipur and Nagaland as ideal extended weekend destionations.

Q : What should be a good duration of holidays for Manipur?
A : Four nights Manipur will be a good start as Introduction to the States. A week or 10 days is an ideal duration to experience walks / treks / stays at homestays (in offbeat locations) in Manipur. A short holiday is popular.
Q : Flight / Rail connections for Manipur?
A : The capital of Manipur is Imphal that has the second busiest Airport in North-East after Guwahati with multiple flight connections from many key-airports of India. That makes it an easily accessible destination.
Q : What’s a good time to visit Manipur?
A : October to March is an ideal season to travel here. If you love the rains, September and April should also be fine. Keep a day extra in case rain plays a spoilsport on any of the days (though unlikely).

A : The capital of Nagaland is Kohima. Kohima is 71 kms from Dimapur, the nearest Airport.
Dimapur is also connected by Rail. There are many trains from Guwahati that take about five hours to reach Dimapur.
Budgets permitting, you should fly to Dimapur to save time.
Q : What’s a good time to visit Nagaland?
A : October to April is an ideal season to travel here. If you love the rains, the month of May should also be fine. Keep a day extra in case rain plays a spoilsport on any of the days (though unlikely).
